The Canon GL1 is professional quality video equipment in a more compact, affordable camera. For the best possible picture quality, these cameras use three separate 270,000 pixel CCDs (one for each primary color). For great optical quality, the GL1 uses a fixed (non removable) 20x optical (100x digital) zoom L Series fluorite lens. Audio is recorded through the built in microphone which features two pairs of pickup elements. The electronics of the GL1 have many advanced features, including a number of programmed AE modes, as well as both shutter and aperture priority modes, spotlight mode and sand and snow mode which is designed to prevent dark, underexposed subjects in situations with bright backgrounds commonly found in sandy and snowy areas. The GL1 uses an IEEE 1394 port for digital editing and for transferring footage to and from other IEEE 1394 compliant devices making it easy to save and share your memories. Minimize

Don't buy this camera from WorldWide Direct!

Pros: cheap price

Cons: horrible service, false advertising

Author's Review
I am a filmmaker who produces short films for distribution over the Internet. I have been using a borrowed GL1 and just absolutely love it.

I must apologize in advance for diverging from the topic somewhat in this epinion. By that I mean that I do not actually own the Canon GL1 yet. I recently purchased it and am awaiting delivery. However, I feel that this commentary is VERY important for anyone looking to purchase the Canon GL1 online.

Many of you will use price aggregation services such as DealTime.com to find a good price on the camera. Given the fact that its price tag is over $2000, I think that's a wise decision. Most of these search services will return a company called WorldWide Direct(buydig.com) in the results. This company is offering the camera for a very low price. DON'T FALL FOR IT! WorldWide Direct tries to screw you over by forcing you to buy lots of extras in order to pump up their profits.

I placed an order for the camera with one of their salesman over the phone and started to get really excited about the purchase. However, when I explained that I didn't want to buy any extras such as batteries, tapes, or carrying bags, the salesman said he had changed his mind and he would no longer sell me the camera. He launched into a huge pitch trying to badger me into buying all of these extras. When I finally refused, he flat out said, "I'm not going to sell you the camera. I'm going to wait for a better sale to come along where I can add on a bunch of extras". WOW! That has never happened to me before. I tried to reason with WorldWide Direct's customer service to no avail. They just didn't care.

You may have better luck with them but there are so many other good camera shops on the Internet, I advise you to steer clear of WorldWide Direct.
