Is Canon getting a bad rap?

Author's Rating: Rating: 4/5 stars

Pros: well engineered, well made

Cons: it's fussy if not maintained properly

The Bottom Line:
Read the manual and do what it says!

Author's Review
I have read each and every review here, and after reading reviews of other models, I decided I still wanted a Canon Elura 50. I settled on one from ebay that was used and in good shape, and that came with a 2 year extended warranty from Best Buy. I decided if I was going to take a chance on this model, I would at least have some peace of mind with the extended warranty. After owning it for a week here are my thoughts. As soon as I unpacked the camera and inserted a mini dv tape, I and made a brief test recording. Once I played it back, I noticed it was doing the 'mosaic' pattern of distorted playback. I had noticed in the manual that this was a symptom of a dirty tape head, so I headed off to Circuit City to buy a cleaner. Once I got home and cleaned the heads, it worked fine. So I am wondering how many of these other users read that in the manual, and cleaned the heads? Maybe Canon is getting a bad rap-I didn't notice anyone who said they had that problem also mentioning that is still did it after cleaning the heads. Could this problem really be such a simple fix? I also got the 'eject cassette' message, and was able to take the tape out and insert the head cleaner in and clean the heads. Once I did that, it has worked fine ever since. I think if one actually reads the manual and does what it says do, you might not have the problems others are having. I think the camera is well engineered, well made, and if handled with care, should last a while and perform nicely. Only time will tell if my experience with the Elura will be a positive one, but so far so good.
