Author's Review
Well 'bout 2 years ago I purchased this camera from a local JcPenney outlet store. I knew that this camera was made in 2000 and had a S-T-E-E-P price of $1,500. So I though for $300.00 I thought I would give it a try. For that price in 2004 I could of purchased a BRAND NEW digital camcorder but they didn't have the features and the small size of this canon elura.

Boy was I happy I bought this camera. It literally changed my life. This camera takes exceptionally good video. The size of it is perfect, don't need to carry a huge camera bag everywhere you go just to take a snapshot of some animals. The quality of video is awesome. It has many features that are pretty useful like the mediocre video transitions, SD picture card, firewire input, color viewfinder, and lots of other things. It is extremely easy to take video with this unit, just stick the mini dv tape in and press start. The mini dv takes up to 90 minutes of video in lowest quality mode. They are much smaller then old video cassettes but still not the size of mini dvd's yet. When hooking up the video to my mac and pc it's extremely easy. In Window's Movie Editor it instantly sees the camera and downloads the picture. In iLife '05 it's the same thing. A con about this camera is the reliability, my camera needed a new ccd which canon replaced for free with it's recall. I was extremely happy about that because the picture of the videos would become distorted and pixilated. I've also heard of the "REMOVE THE CASSET" recall too. Luckily that hasn't happened to my canon yet.

Optics-
This camera has a Canon Optical and Digital Zoom Lens. For me it takes pretty good picture. It has 10x Optical zoom, which is pretty low for such an expensive camera. I would never think about using the digital zoom because of the quality of picture.

Features-
This camera has the SD picture mode in it. It can take regular digital pictures just like your digital camera. The pictures turn out O.K, they are only about 1.0 megapixel. I would leave that to your digital camera.

The mini-dv mode in this camera works great. I just switch it from mini-dv to SD picture card and your off. Like I said this camera takes excellent picture for.

This camera has many wacky and cheesy transitions. They are good if you need then on the go, but I would leave that part to your computer's video editor.

The LCD screen on this camera is pretty small, only 2.0". It's O.K, I just would of wished for a little bigger. The color viewfinder works great, gets the job done without using as much battery life as the LCD.

The battery life on this camera is pretty low. I can only shoot about 45 minutes to an hour on one battery. Good thing the batteries are small.

My favorite feature about this camera is the size of it. I must only weigh about a 1 1/2 pounds. I can stuff it in a small camera bag and I'm off. It turns on very fast, so when you need to shoot that last elephant doing the tango you can in about 3 seconds (including getting it out of your camera bag.

Reliability-
This camera is not long term reliable. Mine required a new ccd sensor which canon repaired for free because of the recall. Though if you find a working one or get one fixed then your good to go. My camera was out of warranty and they repaired it for free.

I recommend this camera to anyone. Even though it is almost 7 years old product there is no other camera that has these features in the size of the elura. I love this camera and I hope I can keep on loving it. If you wanted one today you probably can find one at a good price on eBay. This camera is great, What more can you ask for?

Try to find a new camera at a electronic store that has this many features in this size and price.
