Spend the extra $100 for a nicer 8mm camcorder

Pros: Cheap, Canon quality
Cons: No stabilizer, no lcd, video light is only average
I would recommend that you pass on the ES50 and go for a slightly better Canon model. Although it is inexpensive and has many good features, it is lacking in some of the necessary features.
1. No stabilizer.
2. No LCD.
3. Built in video light is only average quality.
I found that I really preferred a camcorder with the LCD screen. I also tried to film in average light using the video light and the quality was not very good. I also did not realize the importance of a stabilizer, but I quickly realized that it is a must have for camcorders. All of my recordings using the ES50 were slightly jittery.
An Alternate Suggestion
I bought this camera and sent it back for a slightly higher Canon 8mm model. I chose the Canon ESV410 and couldn't be happier. It was only a little more expensive and it has many more features. It has a stabilizer, nice large color LCD, customizable and preset titles with different colors, 6 digital fades, low-light recording mode and much longer battery life. I also love the fact that you can search by the date. This is great when your looking for a certain event!
Another great feature of the ES410V is that it can automatically record in difficult settings by selecting such settings as Sports or Spotlight mode.
Bottom Line
The ES50 is a good camera if you can get it inexpensively, but at $299 I suggest that you spend the extra money and get a slightly better 8mm camcorder.
