If you are afraid of plunking down mega bucks to get a first camcorder, try the Canon ES50. You can find it on sale for about $250 or less. (Also read, "disposable"!) It's compact size makes it easy to carry anywhere.

I use mine mainly for shooting wildlife, since my hobby is to go out and look for reptiles. I shot film of some black tailed deer at sunset in the shadows, and the picture came out crystal clear. I was also able to zoom in on some elephant seals clearly that were across a small bay.

It's easy to use, and I even let my 8 year old use it. I usually attach it to a tripod when I can, so I don't have to worry about someone jostling me when I am using it! If you are that concerned about the image stabilization, go with the ES55.

The only problems I have, are I can't find any of the accessories at a retail store, and the video light does drain the battery!
