Author's Review
Counter strike (CS) was a phenomenon that no other FPS (first person shooter) to this day had ever reproduced.  Built by a bunch of lunatic developers, it was a mod to the half-life engine.  Remember the mods to Doom 3D that included cursing profusedly after firing the shotgun, and add a million more lines of code into it...you get CS.  Why was CS so special?  Better games came up since than.  Games with more realism, superior graphics, better sound and technology...but the amazing global popularity of CS was never matched.  (EVEN CS Zer0, its own sequel didn't make it!).  Can you imagine CS is still a popular game, despite its crappy graphics?  Its like a Bruce Lee vs. Jet Li comparison.  Jet's films have been so much better by any comparison, but unfortunately he has never made the entry into the mainstream hollywood scene unless in children's movies and supporting roles.

I digress.  10 years down the road, enter Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2.  I am not going to continue with the CS comparisons here - innovations made since CS until now would make this a ridiculous debacle about pacman vs. Tekken 6.  However, I will say that in my opinion MW 2 is the first game to capture the same kind of phenomenon since the days of CS.  The realism and the fun factor are unquestionably beyond any other FPS ever made.  COD5: WOW was also a great game, but finally we have a super realistic FPS set in the modern world with MW2.

The storyline of MW2 gets a lot of heat from nay-sayers.  Its all over the place and cryptic, they say.  Well, people, that is war.  But I am not going to argue that they are trying to simulate a war-like situation by being all over the place.  An FPS is about being pinned to your monitor for hours on the edge of your reflexes blasting left and right until you get a moment of reprise and grandour.  This is not an RPG.  What did you expect?  Read through codex' and character stats, while a 12 year old shoots you in the head?  There is a story, but you feel it more than you live it.  You care about the super-soldier captain who helps you up the mountain while you climb.  When he is taken hostage with 20 rifles pointed at him, you cringe.  You don't want him to die.  But it all happens within moments - you don't know where he came from, if he has kids some where, wife or family...all you know is he is a good soldier, and he helped you.  You don't want this guy to die.  But that is about it.  No background, no future...this is all the storyline you need in the super-fast, on the edge of your seat action.  Yes, the story is all over the place, but its there to get you into the action, its not the action itself.
These small interludes are amazing.  During the single player compaign, you will find yourself in many mini-games that do not feel like after-thoughts, but various actions that somehow add to the overall feel.  Climbing up the mountain with ice-picks, the much advertised snowmobile scene.  Very, very fun.

What blew my mind was the controversial airport scene.  It felt like a moment taken out of a John Woo movie of the 80s, and it almost feels like it was put there for the controversy effect.  Nevertheless, you watch a gun-ho terrorist team take out hundreds of innocents in slow-mo walk, and unfortunately its not some cut-scene.  You ARE part of the terrorist group, undercover as a US-ranger turned CIA ops.  Nothing like a bit of us-funded terrorism to put a game all over the news.  But like everything else in this game, it fills an important gap in the cracks - you are not just shooting cartoonish bad-guys, mr.  You are shooting innocent people who tend to be the real victims of war...and yes, this is war, you are in it.

Single player is perhaps short-lived, but it does give you a good feel into the real meat - tne multi-player action.  I've tried to get through the single player in harder modes, but here it becomes almost impossible to beat - you find yourself looking for little corners where you can hide to survive each scene.  Not my idea of fun.  Nevertheless, the regular setting is challenging and fun enough.

There is also the special ops mode which is new and very, very fun.  Its similar to the mile-high club in the original MW.  You play through special ops missions with a buddy.  COD WOW had a nazi zombies mini-game, but it was not very good.  The special ops requires you too coordinate your actions with your buddies to go through the missions.  It does give you an amazing sense of cooperation which is lacking in most FPS.  Two of my favorite parts was helping out my friend from an AC-130 and the snowmobile racing.

The dept of the multi-player is where this game shines the most, and where it will be a long-lasting game like CS.  Original COD MW was a step in the right direction, but every nuisance of the original has been improved with this version, with a bit of new factors added for more fun.  Aiming and shooting your gun, the sound effects they make and the accuracy / range of each gun has a lot of dept.  The graphics and special effects are top-notch, you feel that you are really in Brazil or Siberia as you go through the game.  Scenery and the attention to detail is truly amazing.

The rewards system that allows your to customize your loadout is there in full-force, with new perks and customizations availble on MW2 (and the weapons, hundreds of weapons!).  They have also tried to make the game a bit more newbie friendly - if you get whacked by the same guy 4 times, you can steal their setup.  It helps a bit, but due to the popularity of this game there is a ridiculous amount of competition online, so you will get killed...a lot.

My only bad in this game is lack of squadron based on chatting.  I don't want to hear some 14 year old curse people off left and right, and you also can't imagine the amount of racial slangs used online.  I like to be able to talk to my friends privately, but its becoming more and more hectic.  I truly hope they implement a patch sometime soon.

Overall this is truly one of the best FPS to come out in the history of gaming.  I recommend it to everyone who is a fan of FPS, or who is a casual FPS gamer.  However, online competition may tick you off sometimes.  Try the special ops missions in this case - they are still fun and you are not trying to kill each other.
