On August 1st, 2003 I bought the Braun 7680 with the automatic self-cleaning Clean & Charge system. I have been using the razor for 6 months now and think this Braun model is the best razor ever produced and I highly recommend it. It provides a really close shave for an electric razor. The Clean & Charge system is brilliant and allows your razor to be cleaned, sanitized and charged all at the same time.

Now, with any product, there is a down side. Braun recommends that the razor be cleaned every day and the fluid cartridge must be replaced every 30 days. I find this to be a pain in the stubble! I decided that the only time I wanted to clean my razor was when it came time to recharge the razor, which averaged out to be every 8 or 9 days.

I decided from day 1, when I bought the razor, to do some product testing and research. Everyday after shaving, I would open up the foil and tap out the stubbles. When ever it came time to recharge my razor, I would snap off the lip on the cleaning cartridge, place it into the charger, hook up the power, place the razor in the charger, then set it to Clean & Charge. When it was fully cleaned and charged (about 75 minutes), I disconnected the power source, removed the razor, popped up the charging system, pulled out the cartridge and snapped the lid back on, I then stuffed two wadded up tissues into the charger bay area where the cartridge was and shut it. This is done because some of the cleaning fluid is still dripping at that point.

The cartridge starts to look “gunky” after several months, but hey, it would look that way anyway if you were cleaning it everyday and decided to pull it out after 15+ Clean & Charges. It still cleans it perfectly.

My test allowed me to use ONE cleaning cartridge for 153 days (Over 5 months)! That’s 21 Clean & Charges. The refill cartridges can be expensive, about $12 for a package of 2, so there’s an incentive to cheat the Braun rules.
