Pay $1000 for AM10? I feel that it is a little overpriced. If you are very careful while buying, then you may get a very low price. I have used a technique which made me get brand new Bose AM-10BK (BK stands for black) for $610(free shipping + $44 CA tax)! Amazed? I was really lucky also. You might have not heard anybody getting a Bose AM10 system for that price.
I brought this almost a year back and have been a very satisfied customer. I love music, movies, surround sounds and I am a gadget lover. I have seen Bose speakers in performance for the first time when I was 15. From that time onwards I always tell myself, I will definitely buy a Bose system. The surround effects are great, I recommend you to buy a good receiver, and the bass is great.
The greatest thing about Bose speakers is that it will never loose value. At any point of time the Bose AM10 retail value is near $1000. The AM10 now comes in two colors the black and the white (AM-10WH) and both look equally beautiful. I have chosen the black one since it matched very well with my furniture. The speakers are truly invisible and gives great performance. The products are very durable and is virtually unbreakable.
The problem with Bose that I have faced is the complaints of disturbances by our neighbors! I do not anyway like the idea of splitting the subwoofer signal from the 4 channels. Why do you have to do that when we have 5.1 channels in the newer systems? This makes us loose the subwoofer channel from a 5.1 channel system. I also do not like the cabling system. We take all the cables to the subwoofer and from there we distribute to other satellite speakers. That makes the cabling a little cluttered. I would have liked it better if each of the cable go directly from my receiver to the individual speakers. I would have liked a powered subwoofer but I know very well that everybody will tell me to go and buy an AM-15 for $1300.
Some people complain that the subwoofer performance is not up to the mark. There are however some small arrangements you can do to make subwoofer perform more. Place your subwoofer facing the wall, preferably near a corner. However keep sufficient distance between the wall and the subwoofer to minimize the distortion. Adjusting the speakers to make it perform better in your room is the key to enjoy better surround effects.
Now I will tell you the technique I have used to get a lower price. It also depends a lot on your luck. Every year Bose comes out with a new series of these speakers. The new version may be having a little better performance. For example the latest series in AM10 is AM-10 series II. You call up the Bose customer service and ask whether they have plans to release the Bose AM-10 series III and what the expected date of release. If it is nearby, then I recommend you to wait till the next release comes to market. Once it is released search in all the online stores, closeout stores, online auction site (like ubid.com) and also in the online haggle stores (like hagglezone.com) and check the price of the previous release. At least one store will have a huge stock which makes them sell at low prices. Always search in Ebay.com and if you see many auctions in ebay for this particular product, then definitely it is getting sold at a low price somewhere.
I have brought this from an online store, but the product was send to me directly from a distributor/audio retailer in NY. I think it is also a good idea to check with the distributor in NY, whether they have a good price. If you want the distributor name email me. Also keep in mid that I am not vouching or recommending this distributor/retailer and I have never dealt with them directly.
I recommend this product to anybody who like seeing good movies in home.
