I have minimal allergies during the summer that aren't that warranting for the prescription stuff, so I stick to Benadryl during that time. The 100 capsule bottle at Costco is also pretty cheap for $15 and lasts me the whole season.

When it comes to keeping allergies in check, Benadryl works great at it. No more runny nose, itchiness, etc. It works ridiculously well for itchiness as that I used to claw myself until drawing blood and not notice it. After Benadryl, it's all gone. :) Same for sneezing and that horrible runny nose.

However, Benadryl's has some side effects that can kick you in the teeth. Although Benadryl serves it's purpose, it'll make you pretty drowsy or knock you right out in some cases. I avoid taking this stuff during the day when I have to go to work, go to school, etc since it's so sedative and makes me drowsy, (better safe than sorry) so it's more optimal for nighttime relief. In other people's cases, the drowsiness might not be as bad (or at all), but it really depends on who you are.

Benadryl is effective and much cheaper than Claritin, but like I've mentioned before, be careful when you're about to take it. I would overall recommend this product, but after warning about the side effects first.
