The BMW X5 is available in two models: 3.0i and 4.4i. The 3.0i is a new trim line for this year. Standard equipment for the 3.0i includes an inline six-cylinder engine, four-wheel disc brakes, full-time four-wheel drive, and keyless entry. The 3.0i also comes with a standard five-speed manual transmission, rain sensing winshield wipers, and tinted glass. Standard equipment for the 4.0i includes a rear defroster, chrome grill, outside heated mirrors, a theft deterrent system, and traction control. Optional features include rear side impact air bags, a power glass moonroof, and the Active Package. The Active Package features a ski sack, heated front seats, a headlamp washer system, and rain sensors for the windshield wipers.

I have enjoyed owning the 5 series sedan and now the 2001 X5 for more than ten years. Based on my personal driving experience and research, I have always believed that BMW was one of the safest vehicles on the road. However, a recent head on collision proved this fact for me and my family.
While on vacation this past August, we were driving along a rural Route 18 heading east in Rosebud, South Dakota. Unbeknownst to us, this region is designated as an open range area. This means that there are no fences surrounding the many farms and the various farm animals in the area are allowed to roam all over. There were no signs indicating this. At about 10 pm in the evening, we slammed our BMW X5 into 4 large black cows that were standing in the middle of the roadway. We were traveling at the speed limit which was 65 miles per hour. All four of the cows were killed.
The front end of our BMW X5 completely absorbed the impact and as a result is unrecognizable. However, we barely felt a jolt on the inside of the vehicle. My husband, myself, my 5 and 9 year old sons were fortunate enough to walk away from this incident without a scratch. We are forever grateful to BMW and are customers for life!
