The BMW 5 series is about as good as it gets

Pros: Powerful engine, beautiful design, always a pleasure to drive, very trouble free
Cons: there are only 2: cupholders are cheap, and the steptronic lurches at times in downshifts
The Bottom Line:
This is one of the best cars I've ever owned, I'll never buy anything but BMW ever again
We bought a 2001 BMW 530i off lease from a friend last year, and it was the best purchase we ever made. This car is about as close to flawless as you can get in a luxury car. The ride is smooth enough to keep you comfortable, but not soft enough to put you to sleep. The 3.0 liter I6 is a FANTASTIC engine which makes all the right performance car sounds past 4 grand. I love cars and enjoy speed as much as everyone else, trust me, this engine is not devoid of power by any means. Unlike the 528i that proceeded it, you aren't putting yourself in the penalty box by choosing this over a 540i (0-60 w/ the automatic comes in about 6.8 seconds). The gas mileage is also great, even in hard driving I can still average 20MPG city. The steptronic transmission is a joy and when in manual or sport automatic mode, shifts are quick and precise, no gear hunting here folks. This car also features a 2 stage gas pedal with a kickdown button (if you get the automatic), which makes the engine rev faster and downshifts to the lowest possible gear for the speed you are traveling. 2 packages you must get are the sport and premium packages. The 10 way power sport seats are very comfortable and hold you in nicely. Unlike the 3 series, the base sound system is very good and wood trim comes standard. It is also very reliable, mine has 55k miles and has never had one problem. The styling is also timeless, my car is almost 5 years old and I still get compliments. This car is probably the best mix of sport and luxury in a 4 door sedan. Notice how I said sport AND luxury. If you're an old granny who wants the supplest, quietest ride available then don't buy this car. Its a luxury car for driving enthusiasts. Everytime you press the gas, the engine reminds you that you are driving a car that is ALIVE (unlike a lexus which gives off no exciting sounds at all). The handling is razor sharp and the ride is very firm and stiff. The brakes are, in traditional BMW style, absolutely amazing. Steering is very fluid and responsive. Bottom line, if you want a Lexus, buy a lexus. But if you want to drive one of the most exciting and practical 4 door sedans available, this is the car to buy!
