For 2001, the BMW 5 Series is available in five models: the new 525i Sedan and Wagon, the new 530i Sedan, and the 540i Sedan and Wagon. The 525 is a new base model and includes a 184-hp 2.5L in-line six engine. The new 530i sedan replaces last years 528i and includes a 225-hp 3.0L in-line six engine. The Dynamic Stability Control System is standard on all models. The 540i models include Rain Sensor Wipers, Xenon headlights, a power moonroof, and an automatic dimming inside mirror. The Sport Package is available on all models and includes the M-Sport steering wheel, performance tires, 17-inch alloy wheels, and sport suspension. The optional vehicle navigation system includes a trip computer, an Emergency Call System, and a Geographic Disc.

Love this car, wouldn't buy anything else
If you want to read a review that explains nitty-gritty engine details, don't read this. We purchased a 540 sport model this year and believe it is the ideal family car. We had a '94 540i but the latest model is much better.
Driving in Tokyo can be extremely scary, but our 540 can fly in and out of heavy traffic with ease. No problems with acceleration, and the anti-skidding/locking brakes are great in bad weather. You can feel safe in this car. It has a solid, but not too cushy ride--good for those who want a sports car, equally good for those who want a safe, comfortable ride for the family.
Quiet, dependable, beautiful styling both in and out, solid handling, relatively low maintenance, drives like a sports car, rides like a larger sedan. This is the ultimate family car, no kidding.
