A best buy inexpensive quality network camera for remote monitoring.
I use network cameras to remotely monitor my company's server rooms and also use them at home. We bought several AXIS 2100 and we love them. Relying on PC-connected webcams had just been a mess. With a network camera, AXIS-style, you just connect it directly to your ethernet network or a modem. The camera has its own IP address and can be accessed directly from a web browser, or can be integrated into webpages, applications, etc. It can take snapshots or send streaming video and using software or simple programming (it supports ftp, cgi-bin interface, etc) you can store the data on hard disks. You can password protect in different levels (Root, Admin, Userlist, etc), and that it internally runs Linux bodes well for reliability. In fact, since we installed our cameras, they have always been up and not failed so far.
