"Pan American World Airways - Aviation History through the Words of its People is a tribute to the legacy of one of the world's great airlines and the men and women who for six decades were the soul of the Company. James Baldwin and Jeff Kriendler have created a compelling book, which through the words of its contributors, captures much of the joy, adventure and spirit which was Pan Am. - Edward S. Trippe, Chairman, Pan Am Historical Foundation "Fathered by the legendary Juan Trippe, Pan American was the leader in international aviation exploration and development. A relentless risk-taker, Trippe was an innovator and ultimate entrepreneur...and this book captures many of Pan Am's most memorable events from personal accounts of the employees who were there." - Sir Richard Branson, Chairman Virgin Group "Once upon a time, not so long ago... flying on Pan American Airways was every bit as exciting as your destination. We miss your style Pan Am!" - Erik Lindbergh, Founder, Lindbergh Electric Aircraft Prize (LEAP), and Grandson, Charles Lindbergh "Pan Am...Queen of the Skies and pioneer around the world...shrunk the globe through innovation, and daring and glamorous service in its day. This anthology takes the reader into a coveted position, learning from the people who actually experienced the major milestones in its rise....and fall." - Tony Fernandes, CEO, AirAsia Berhad and Founder, Tune Group "For anyone who has ever traveled, this book is a must. Filled with untold eye-witness accounts of some of the major events that helped shape PanAm, this fascinating anthology helps kindle the magic of fl ight and ensures PanAm's deserved legacy in the annals of commercial aviation." - Jerry Hendin, Managing Partner, Alliance Public Relations, and Former VP, Communications, Boeing Commercial Airplane Group "Pan Am, perhaps the greatest airline in the history of the world, lives now only as memories, and those memories have never been collected and shared as well as they are in this book." - Ted Reed, Airlines Reporter, The Street, and formerly of the Miami Herald "This unique anthology approach rings true because it comes from the hearts and souls of the employees, those who built Pan Am to its iconic leadership position in international travel. Whether it was ushering in the jet age and later the Jumbo jet era, building luxurious hotels for high-end travelers, or fl ying troops to global military theaters, Pan Am was a proud symbol of America at home and overseas." - David Neeleman, Founder, Jetblue Airways and Founder, Chairman, and CEO, Azul Brazilian Airlines

The authors provide a well-researched and well-illustrated history of commercial aviation's transition to the age of jet airliners--from 1952 to 1962. They describe the planes that made commercial flight possible, from the earlier propeller-driven aircraft to the Lockheed Constellation to piston engines and Douglas and Boeing designs. A special chapter is devoted to the Boeing 707. Many photos, ads, and drawings are included. All three of the authors have had long careers in the airline industry: Proctor is an author, editor, and photographer; Mike Machat is a former aviation artist and illustrator, and served as editor of Wings & Airpower magazine; Craig Kodera is an airline pilot and an aviation artist. ... Read more
The British Aircraft Corporation was formed from The Bristol Aeroplane Company, English Electric, Vickers-Armstrong and Hunting in 1960. In its short, seventeen-year, life, the British Aircraft Corporation built some of the most important aircraft and missiles of the 1960s, 1970s and beyond: its best-known products included the Jaguar and Tornado warplanes, Rapier missile and One-Eleven airliner. It was also responsible for the stillborn TSR2 strike aircraft, the 1965 cancellation of which remain controversial to this day. Most famously, the Anglo-French Concorde supersonic airliner came from the BAC stable. BAC was subsumed into British Aerospace (now BAE Systems) in 1977, but many of its products remain in service to this day. This book tells their complete story.

Airplane Décor ? The Sopwith Camel is one of the more celebrated aircraft in aviation history and Tailwinds is pleased to offer this replica Sopwith Camel propeller that is meticulously crafted in the U.S.A. The propeller, just like the original, is skillfully constructed with laminated hardwood. The manufacture of the propeller begins with vigilant shaping of the blades as early day propellers had a more curved silhouette than their modern day counterparts. The Sopwith Camel propeller blades are then sanded numerous times to give the propeller a velvety smooth texture. The final step occurs when several coats of an oil based clear finish are hand rubbed on the wood to highlight the gorgeous laminations of the wooden propeller. This Sopwith Camel wood airplane propeller evokes memories of a bygone era. It recalls the early days of aviation when biplanes and tri-wing planes roamed the skies during WW I engaging in aerial combat. The Sopwith Camel aircraft was known to be difficult to fly but had excellent maneuverability for that time and could reach speeds of up to 115 mph. Eventually 5,490 of the British fighter plane were manufactured and the Sopwith Camel has been credited with downing 1,294 enemy aircraft which is more than any of the other allied fighters. Click here to view our scale model replica of a Sopwith Camel aircraft. The Sopwith Camel propeller measures about 50" long and is available in two styles. Learn more about the Sopwith Camel Propeller with a clock. Please allow 1-2 weeks for this exceptional propeller to ship. Send This Page To A Friend

Airplane Décor ? Own a bit of aviation history with the Curtiss Jenny Propeller Clock. This propeller clock is actually a scale model replica of a propeller used on the JN-4 aka ?Jenny? 1917 era biplane. The wood propeller is exquisitely crafted in the U.S. of laminated hardwood and a walnut stain is hand applied to bring out the natural beauty of the wood grain. We?ve added an attractive 12/24 hour quartz clock in the center part of the propeller called the hub. The clock is very appealing as the brass outer ring complements the dark walnut stain. It also features a second hand and requires a ?AA? battery for use. The JN-4 Jenny aircraft was built by the Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company for use by the Army Air Service to train pilots during WW I. After the war the Army sold thousands of surplus Jenny?s and the aircraft quickly became the backbone of civilian aviators. This began the rise of new era in aviation which is often referred to as the ?golden age of flight?. During this time Americans became enamored with the incredible flying aerobatics of the barnstormer pilot and their fascinating flying machines. The Curtiss Jenny Propeller Clock shown here measures about 66" long and please allow 1-2 weeks for this exceptional propeller to ship. The Jenny Propeller Clock is also available in a different style without the clock. Learn more about the Curtiss Jenny Propeller without a clock. Send This Page To A Friend

On 17 December 1903 with the first powered flight of history a big dream of mankind became true. Four men; a boy and his dog participated; when Orville Wright rose with the double-decker "Flyer "for 12 seconds into air. Later on that day his brother Wilbur flew even 59 seconds and covered a distance of 279 meters. With these pioneer flights began the racing progress of aviation in the following decades. Only three years later the history of pilot watches begins. The Brazilian balloonist Alberto Santos Dumont asked a friend; a famous watchmaker from Paris; to develop a special clock for pilots; that was carried at the wrist. Up to then the relatively young fashion of wrist-watches was considered among men as "womanish"; because real gentlemen still used the watch at the chain. So at the same time the first pilot watch AND the first wrist-watch for men came into being. SkyTimer watches unite all qualities of the original pilot watches with the most modern technology. They are characterised by an extreme robustness and shock resistance. To ensure a good readability in the dark; all watches are equipped with luminous numbers and hands. In addition some models have a special red second hand. Another aspect of the steadfastness are the robust leather straps or alternatively solid metal bands. Characteristics such as anti-magnetism and a high resistibility against extreme climatic and kinetic loads are natural. SkyTimer watches guarantee always the right and exact time - in any situation! ... Read more
At the beginning of the twentieth century the skies presented a new frontier, one that attracted daredevils, businessmen, politicians, and engineers enticed by a new form of transportation. Louisiana entrepreneurs and pilots proved instrumental in ushering in the Golden Age of Aviation. They advanced aircraft design, revolutionized aerial crop dusting, pioneered airmail routes, pushed the limits of stunt flying, and entertained spectators with air races. A pilot and freelance writer with more than twenty years of experience in the aviation industry, Vincent P. Caire chronicles the state's history of flight in 196 vintage and contemporary photographs, many never-before published. Photos of early aviation pioneer John Moisant, air racing champion General James Doolittle, barnstormer Roscoe Turner, aircraft designer James Wendell, and founder of Delta Airlines C. E. Woolman reflect Louisiana's zeal for aeronautics. Caire explains how the efforts of Senator Huey P. Long and Harry P. Williams, co-owner of the Wedell-Williams Air Service in Patterson, Louisiana, influenced the development of viable airmail routes throughout the southeastern United States. Rarely seen photographs depict the Art Deco elegance of the first modern, multioperational passenger terminal in the nation--Shushan Airport in New Orleans.A captivating visual tour spanning one hundred years, Louisiana Aviation celebrates the state's air history, evident in Louisiana's seventy airports, 5,000 aircraft, 7,000 pilots, and numerous airshows in operation today.
