Avaya PARTNER 34D

Lots Of Buttons = Lots Of Features Can Be Accessed.

Author's Rating: Rating: 5/5 stars

Pros: Lots of programmable buttons. Backlit LCD.

Cons: Arrangement of lower buttons with gaps looks a little odd.

The Bottom Line:
Looking at the purchase of an Avaya Partner ACS? You won't be disappointed with the 34D.

Author's Review
The Avaya Partner 34D is one of 3 telephone desk sets designed to work with the Avaya Partner ACS. This telephone will also work with the Avaya Merlin Magix, but a special card needs to be installed in the chassis. This telephone will not function if you plug it directly into a plain old telephone line.

Of the 3 telephone sets in the Partner ACS lineup, the 34D offers the greatest number of programmable buttons (36). Of the 36 programmable buttons, 32 have red & green status LEDs and 4 buttons do not. Other than the number of programmable buttons, the 34D functions just like the Avaya Partner 18D. The large number of programmable buttons makes the 34D a great choice as a receptionist or executive telephone.

The first generation Partner Euro 34D, which is what this telephone is, is available in 3 colors: black, gray & white.
The second generation Partner Euro 34D, (now on the market), sports a slightly modified face and drops the gray color.

The telephone sports a standard 12 gray with white lettering button telephone keypad. To the left of the keypad, are buttons for built in features such as hold, speaker phone, microphone mute, conferencing, volume up, volume down, and feature button used in programming the extension and the telephone system itself. The "hold" button is actually red with white lettering. All of these buttons are situated on the lower half of the telephone's face and are set against a black, gray or white background (depending on the color of telephone purchased). The 12 button telephone keys as well as the preset function keys are roundish. The 38 buttons above are gray & rectangular. The speaker phone button and the microphone hands free button have a green status LED to indicate when they are active.

The middle section of the telephone contains 38 push buttons. 2 of them are used to access an intercom to allow the user to communicate with a particular extension. In normal use, the 2 buttons are interchangeable, but they do have specific purposes during system programming. As stated above, all but 4 of these buttons have red & green LEDs to indicate the status of the functions the buttons support. The green LED is on when a function is being used at the particular telephone and the red LED is on when a function, or telephone line, is in use on another telephone set. The functions the buttons support are recorded on a paper directory that overlays the buttons. This piece of paper is called, by industry insiders, a desi. The desi is held in place with a clear plastic cover. The top left corner of the desi has the word "AVAYA' printed on it. The upper right hand corner could say 1 of 3 things: nothing, ETR 34D or Partner 34D. Just below the bottom right-most button is a rectangular LED. The LED is designed to light when a voice mail message is left for the particular extension, assuming a voicemail system is in use. The desi's do provide a small amount of space near each button so the button's function can be recorded. If a nice neat printout is desired, there are companies that have free Windows-based software available for downloading. This will allow you to use your computer and printer to make clean & neat looking desi's.

The top portion of the telephone is devoted to a 2 line x 24 character back lit LCD. The LCD can be positioned 3 different ways and the brightness of the back light can be adjusted to satisfy one's needs. The word "AVAYA" appears in big red letters just below the lower left corner of the LCD. When idled, the LCD will display the time of day as well as the date. Depending on which revision processor you have in your system, the elapsed time will show when the telephone is in use.

The base of the telephone can be reversed to accommodate wall mounting of the telephone. The base is removed, rotated and most likely, reused. Also a little clip that is under the telephone's handset, needs to be reversed to hold the handset into place when the unit is mounted on a wall. There are 2 jacks under the base. 1 is where the cord that connects the telephone to a system wall jack is located and the other jack is used to allow connection of a single line device, such as a card reader or an answering machine. When sitting on a desk, the base can be set to tip the telephone up at different angles to satisfy the individual needs of the user.

To the left of all the buttons is the handset. The handset if connected by a short coiled cord to a jack on the left side edge of the telephone.

The telephone is pretty much straight forward to use. You can either pick up the handset and dial away, or push the "Spkr" button and use the hands free feature.

The exact optional/programmable features available vary, depending on which ones the system's administrator has chosen to assign to a particular extension. The non-programmable features work quite well. When telephone is idled, pressing the volume up or down buttons adjust the loudness of the ringer. If the buttons are pressed when the handset is lifted off of it's "nest", the sound from the handset will be adjusted. If the hands-free speaker phone is in use and the volume control buttons are pressed, the speaker phone will get louder or softer. A call can be placed on hold and picked up at another extension.

When assigning functions to the 36 programmable keys, telephone lines should always be assigned to buttons with status LEDs so one can tell if a line is in use. Features such as Last Number Redial, do not need to be placed on a key with LEDs.

Due to the number of buttons in the middle of the telephone unit, there are a few gaps between the 12 button keypad and the preset function buttons. I've always thought that the 34D looks a little strange, compared to the 18D telephone. The way that the lower keypads are arranged on the 34D, there is a gap between the preset function keys and the handset. This gap is not found on the 6 button and 18D telephones.

The buttons have a good feel to them when pressed. The speaker phone section sounds clean & clear. The LCD is easy to see and the handset is comfortable to hold and sounds clear. The ringer can be set from very quiet to very loud. I would recommend getting a longer handset cord as well as a detangler to allow for greater mobility and prevent the coiled cord from kinking up. The status LEDs can be hard to see in a brightly lit room.

All told, the 34D offers the access to the most features that the Avaya Partner ACS can offer. While it has the largest footprint of the 3 Partner telephones offered, it seems worth the loss of desk space. If you are considering purchasing an Avaya Partner ACS system, the 34D will give you the biggest bang for your buck.

A quick note: The telephone pictured above is an older version of the 34D with the Lucent Technologies logo and a pullout feature card tray. Once Avaya separated from Lucent, the logo was changed to "Avaya", moved to the left side of the display and the slide out tray was done away with.
