Great second hand car.

Author's Rating: Rating: 5/5 stars

Pros: Quality interior finish. Quattro handling is excellent.

Cons: Tiptronic lacks response. Stock suspension (non sport) too soft. Still a little pricey.

The Bottom Line:
Recommended: Excellent German quality, Quattro handling, good after sales service provided by dealership.

Author's Review
First off, I am writing this review based on my experience with a second hand 2001 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro with Tiptronic that was purchased in Canada.

I made the purchase from an Audi dealership in March 2004. It was an off-lease vehicle, with 45000KM driven. In the past 6 months, I have driven this car for about 8000KM. I have always been wary about used cars, but this one was a "certified pre-own" that came with the balance of factory warranty (1 year) plus another 2 year of Audi extended warranty. The relatively low mileage was also a good point of this car. I traded in my 1998 Subaru Legacy 2.5GT AWD for this car.

I am happy to report that there was no major mechanical problem with this car. The engine is smooth and strong, the handling is excellent with Quattro traction. I really love the way the interior looks, everything is in matching red illumination.

Things to watch out for:

Tires - I replaced the original Goodyear Eagle LS tires with a set of Yokohama AVS ES100. The original tires were still good, but I decided I want something more aggressive.

Brakes - They were almost worn when I got the vehicle. A month after I got the vehicle, I went back to the dealer saying the brakes are low, they replaced the front disc and pads for me for free. Couple more later, I asked them to check the rear brakes, and they replaced the rear disc and pads for me as well, also for free.

Also, the vacumn line to throttle body was ruptured. I didn't noticed it, but the mechanic did when they took my car for a test drive while they were checking out the brakes. It was also replaced for free.

So far, I have been very pleased with the services provided to me by the dealership.

The only complaint I have about this car is that being an automatic transmission, I am losing some responsiveness on acceleration. The stock spring and shocks are rather soft, I guess it would fit well for a near-luxury car. But if you're looking for a "spirited" ride, I'd suggest you go for a manual transmission, and go for the sports package which had stiffer springs and larger anti-sway bar.

If you're into "souping up" or "modding", there are unlimited options available to you for this car. For example, chipping, suspension, turbo upgrade, exhaust, in-take, etc.
