Small, cute, but not for real use

Author's Rating: Rating: 2/5 stars

Pros: Price, size, movie frame rate

Cons: Movie quality, takes AAA batteries

The Bottom Line:
I cannot recommend this camera for anything other than a gadget or toy for the kids.

Author's Review
This camera is very portable, which makes it very convenient. The combination of its low price (I paid $120) and its above-average specifications for its price and size made it a very attractive purchase. However, after using it for just 3 days I'm taking it back.

The camera's specifications make it stand out from similarly priced mini-cameras: 3 Megapixel resolution, create AVIs with audio at 320x240 @ up to 30fps, built-in flash, digital zoom, built-in LCD display, accepts SD card for additional photo and movie capacity.

The camera's digital photo mode is quite acceptable for basic use (sending email photos of the kids to grandparents, accessory camera for taking on vacation, etc.). However, the flash is overpowering up close and (somehow) underpowered for subjects more than 5-10 feet away. There's also an unusually long delay after pressing the shutter button before the picture is actually taken, which can lead to botched photos if you're not careful.

Outdoors, under ideal lighting conditions, the movie mode was fair at best. The motion smoothness was very good, far better than other similarly priced cameras I've used. Under less than perfect lighting (such as indoors with the lights on), the images tend to be very red and grainy. In either case, it should be understood that the audio pickup is for someone speaking loudly and clearly no more than a few feet away.

I should also note that the camera has no traditional viewfinder, so all aiming MUST be done using the LCD display. Although it's a decently bright display, using it outdoors can prove to be a bit of a challenge.

This camera takes AAA batteries. That makes it nice and light (and obviously helps keep the size down), but it also makes the battery life more limited and makes finding rechargeable batteries more of a challenge. I found that a set of AAA alkaline batteries gave me about 30-40 photos and 3 minutes of video (about 10 short movie segments).
