Preminger's political thriller examines the dark side of politics and its tragic personal repercussions for an essentially decent man. When a President nominates a controversial candidate for Secretary of State, the political dealing and infighting begins as dissident legislators are willing to stoop even to blackmail to stop his confirmation -- or assure it. Preminger seemed to hit his stride lending a documentary tension to legal or political settings, and this is one of his best. Laughton's last role.

ADVISE & CONSENT - Preminger's 11th, as 'Independent'. Senate Hearings De-Mystified?
| Author's Rating: |
|
Pros: Cast, Story, Performances. Enactments of Government morals and customs of a half-century ago
Cons: Presumption that the Senate could govern itself. The script suggests that it can.
Bottom Line:
Explains, in less than two hours, as much or more than some Civics Classes I have taken. Better than getting "The TV News Stations" to explain how government works.

Advise & Consent: Getting Confirmed for a Government Job
| Author's Rating: |
|
Pros: Walter Pidgeon, Charles Laughton
Cons: Slow moving and a bit boring
Bottom Line:
Not as timeless as Preminger would have liked. The exposé of the inner workings of the government have been superseded by actual developments in Washington.

A movie with little control
| Author's Rating: |
|
Pros: Sociologically interesting topic, decent acting
Cons: Plot cannot sustain more than 2 hours, very weak plot
Bottom Line:
If you have to see all of Laughton or Fonda pix, see it, otherwise avoid.
