Only the Best, my friend

Author's Rating: Rating: 5/5 stars

Pros: Cornering, 3rd row split folding seat, sunroof, acceleration, smooth ride.

Cons: Sound system. It can be improved inexpensively.

Handling And Control: 5

The Bottom Line:
Unless you want to spend another $10K on an X5, this is the best SUV under $40K. Sports-car-like ride.

When we decided to downsize from our Expedition for fuel economy purposes, we decided on the Mountaineer. We hit an Acura dealer en route to Mercury dealer where we planned to buy a Moutaineer. Test-drove an MDX, fell in love. Dealer wanted MSRP. We left with intention of saving money on Mountaineer. Test-driving MDX 30 min prior to Mountaineer was the clincher. MPG in MDX exceeds similar SUVs. Largest factor was the comfortable MDX cabin, the car-like feel, the sports-car-like cornering, and the smooth & prompt acceleration. We found a dealer that took $1K off MSRP. Although the nav system is intriguing, we could not wring out of it $2K worth of use. Despite spending $4K more for the MDX over Mountaneer, quality, nice accessories, and wonderful ride all persuaded us that $4K was an investment.
