Incredible speeds come at a price......heat!

Author's Rating: Rating: 3/5 stars

Pros: Handles heavy loads, real fast, CAN be overclocked.

Cons: Overheating!!

The Bottom Line:
The 2100+ is a great product from Athlon which, for me, sadly suffers from an overheating problem.

While building my computer, and selecting a processor, I went with an AMD since in the past I have always had Intel's and I was craving a change. Never had problems with Intel, but I had heard amazing things about AMD, so I thought I would see what all the talk was about.
After getting the computer up and running and installing some great online games (CounterStrike and the demo to Battlefield 1942), I began to have problems with the computer shutting down in the middle of these online games, which obviously require a lot of work from the processor. So I quickly picked up a $25 Fan for my processor (the Volcano 7, I would recommend it!) and attached that, which was a huge pain. The fan has done wonders, but even with it, after playing for a few (ok, I admit, 5 hours of Battlefield online) I overheated again and had to let my computer cool down. I am sure it doesn't help that I live in a dorm which averages around 90 degrees all the time.
But even with this problem, I have enjoyed the incredible speed of my AMD Athlon XP 2100+. I've read other reviews on different sites that say you can Overclock an AMD to around 2.1Ghz (the 2100+ normally runs at 1.73Ghz). I have yet to try this, and am not sure I will due to my overheating problem, but it would definitely be cool to try. Still, the processor has handled various heavy work loads with ease and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another AMD, although I would definitely look toward getting a case with more than 1 CPU fan and an extra Processor fan is a must.
