Excellent Picture, Decent Price, However Early Trouble

Author's Rating: Rating: 4/5 stars

Pros: Picture, Ease of use, Looks, Did I say Picture

Cons: In the shop as I type this. I will edit when returned.

The Bottom Line:
Even with the problems I have encountered I would still buy a Hitachi. Better than Sony even in the shop!

I bought this Hitachi 57inch at Circuit City in March 2005. This is the second Hitachi projection tv I have bought. The first one (53inch Widescreen) lasted 3 years and was working as well so I gave it to my son and I bought this one. For the first 8 months it was perfect. Picture was great like the previous one. Lots of inputs including HDMI. The sound isnt great but none of these widescreens are. When you get one of these bad boys you get the surround to go along with it. Well last week while watching the Carolina game I noticed that the picture was a little darker than I was used to seeing. I changed the channels and it was like that on all of them. It got progressively worse until I had to go into the settings and crank up the brightness to 100%. Even then the picture was dark. Finally about midnight it was so dark I was no longer able to even see the menu when I pulled it up. I called customer service ( I didnt opt for the Extended Warranty from CC since the last one was so good, BAD MISTAKE ) and I was on hold for 45 minutes while waiting to speak to someone. When someone did answer they told me to call the nearby repair center and they would send me a technician out to fix it onsite. Well I call the next day and they sent out 2 people to load my tv up for transport back to the shop. I was told they never do repair onsite for HITACHI products. Interesting to say the least but I am supposed to call them tomorrow to get a progress report. I have 3 months left on my warranty so I am hoping for the best. I have a feeling that this isnt the first time this set will be in need of repair. Even so I would recommend this set, as the picture, when working is Fantastic! Make sure you get the extended warranty though. Its 189.00 for 2 years and 349.00 for 4 years. Of course thats negotiable and for another forum altogether.
