The Bottom Line:
This is a cheap item that can make your iPod experience hundreds of times better, but there are better (more $)options available.
After receiving an iPeo Mini (4gb) for my birthday the first iAccessory I bought was the Griffin iTrip. I had seen my brother use this with his Mini, and I thought it looked like a must own since I wanted to use my iPod in my car. So I went to Target and picked one up for $15.
If you are not familiar with the iTrip, it is a wireless modulator that allows you to play your iPod through the FM band of your stereo. It is a very small item and it is as simple to use as plug it in, tune your stereo, and play the iPod. It makes your iPod a very versatile device and it allows you to play a lot of different music very easily.
The iTrip comes preprogramed to play your iPod on FM 87.9, but includes software to program it to play on what looks like all FM stations. 87.9 comes in pretty well here in the Washington DC area, so while I did install he software, I haven't put it to any use.
The software installed differently than I thought it would (as a playlist in iTunes), but it installed easily and without hassle. The fact that all of the stations were now in my music library seemed odd, so I deleted all of them except a couple. I saw no need to have every station preset into my iPod.
The wireless modulator works quite well, but it isn't as clear as a CD, and the music certainly doesn't sound as good as when you play it on your headphones, but if I wanted it to sound perfect, I would have sprung for a more expensive direct hook up. Songs play well with little distortion, and audiobooks and spoken words sound very good. I have found that it is much better to keep the iPod volume at about 75% and adjust your stereo volume accordingly. I have found the same to be true when using the iPod and iTrip on my home stereo system.
The only complaint I have with this item is that quite often after using it I have reset my iPod. This is no big deal, it just takes holding down two buttons for 6 seconds, and waiting for the iPod to reboot, but it is a hassle that I find annoying. That is the only problem I have ever had with the iTrip.
For the price this item is great, but I have seen other items that perform a little better, and have some nicer features. But you have to pay for these things, and that is ultimately your decision to make!
