Although Jeep got plenty of attention for the Rescue concept vehicle that debuted in Detroit earlier this year, no one figured anything like it would ever see a showroom floor. Recent spy photos suggest otherwise, however, as the prototypes bear the same kind of boxy, over the top styling as the concept. Built on the same platform as the new Grand Cherokee, the Commander will be slightly larger and incorporate a third row of seats. Hemi power will no doubt be part of the package along with plenty of built in off road ability.

Great all-purpose SUV

Pros: Stylish looks, grips the road like a tank, every feature imaginable.
Cons: Drinks gas quickly.
The Bottom Line:
Anyone that has a family will greatly enjoy the Jeep Commander as long as they are prepared for the gasoline expense, as with any other large SUV.
We just bought our '06 Commander for my wife in September, after selling our 2003 Suburban that had lots of miles on it. Initially we were looking for a Ford Edge but we stumbled on the Commander at the dealership. Black, tan leather, Limited with a 5.7L Hemi! We test drove it and fell in love with all the features: rear DVD for the kids, 6-CD changer, navigation, great sound system, 4WD, sunroof, tons of power, and all the creature comforts you can imagine. Acceleration is smooth but strong in the big Hemi. The transmission is interesting: it's an automatic, however, you can downshift or upshift by moving the shifter knob left or right with very little effort.
The Carfax report was detailed also, and I was able to find where the Jeep had last been serviced regularly. The service manager was able to show me that the last owner was meticulous about maintenance, and provided me plenty of information. This made me feel much better about the purchase overall.
So far the only thing it has needed was a software update for the final drive control module, as the "service 4WD system" indicator came on. After the update, we have not gotten the indicator. These Jeeps are very similar to the Grand Cherokee internally and have several computer modules that govern engine and drive operation. Computer updates are a necessity over time and usually cost around $100.
The Jeep Commander with the Hemi will drink gas VERY quickly, so beware of this. And if you get the 4.7 or 5.7, you must use 89 octane gas. Plan on getting poor mileage overall - we are getting 14 mpg. But my wife does not commute with it, only using it for short trips, and with the weather getting worse here in VA soon I'll be happy knowing she and my kids are driving something big and safe. She loves it.
FYI - The picture at left is NOT a Commander. It appears to be a Compass.
