Although Jeep got plenty of attention for the Rescue concept vehicle that debuted in Detroit earlier this year, no one figured anything like it would ever see a showroom floor. Recent spy photos suggest otherwise, however, as the prototypes bear the same kind of boxy, over the top styling as the concept. Built on the same platform as the new Grand Cherokee, the Commander will be slightly larger and incorporate a third row of seats. Hemi power will no doubt be part of the package along with plenty of built in off road ability. Minimize

A Land Rover LR3 Killer

Author's Rating: Rating: 5/5 stars

Pros: Uconnect, Hemi, Rear Seat DVD, smooth 4x4, REAL FAST!, value, 0% interest

Cons: poor fuel economy

The Bottom Line:
This is a near luxury 4x4 if you get it decked out. It is a WAY better value then the LR3. Drive one and you'll likely buy one.

Author's Review
We purchased a 2006 Jeep Commander Limited with the 5.7 Litre Hemi 4x4 about two months ago. So far, so good.

We traded in a Chevrolet Suburban since it was way too big for my wife to drive.

Highlights:
1. The 5.7 L Hemi is a blast to drive. It develops 330 horse power and is fast--real fast. If you want to you can smoke 90%+ of all vehicles on the road. The Hemi does get poor gas mileage and the vehicle calls for mid grade 89 octane which doesn't help either. In town it is particularly poor, like 10-12 miles per gallon.
2. It is a great value. I nearly bought the LR3 from Land Rover but decided on the Commander since it was nearly 10K cheaper and offered o% interest. LR3 while it has a better snob value doesn't even come close to the Commander in terms of overall value.
3. The 4x4 is as smooth as silk.
4. My truck has the back up camera. It shows you what is behind you displayed in the navigation screen. This is new from Jeep, just came out in June. It is only a $195 option and really is necessary due to the stadium seating.
5. Stadium seating: my kids like the fact both the second and third row seating are progressively higher than the previous row. This is real nice for them seeing out, etc.
6. U Connect. Using Bluetooth technology you can make calls through the radio. It sounds great and I'd highly recommend this GREAT option.
7. Navigation system. It is real nice, the only criticism is that you can't do all of the searching, etc. while the car is in motion. My Acura TL's nav system is better but the Jeep's screen is of good size.
8. Rear seat DVD. This is real nice and the best part is that the connections for XBOX 360 or camcorder are done on the floor, not up at the headliner like in the Suburban. The Jeep also has a slot for the remote to "live" much better too then the Suburban whose remote invariably got lost.
9. Sun roof. There are three sunroofs, like on the LR3. One opens to let air in and the others let light in which helps claustrophobia in the back seats.
10. Seats: they are leather and heated. I got the upgraded cowhide and I would recommend this. They are very plush and supportive.
11. Styling: I like the way it looks and so do many other people. We constantly get positive remarks, however this is NOT a mini-van look at all (like the Grand Cherokee). It is a truck through and through.
