2005 Honda Civic VP, Coupe- Excellent Basic Transportation

Author's Rating: Rating: 5/5 stars

Pros: Excellent fuel economy, great dependability and resale value.  Plenty of room.

Cons: You can feel the road, every bump.  Brakes are a little squishy.

The Bottom Line:
I definitely recommend this car.  It is economical, safe, and reliable with the best resale value in its class.

I bought my '05 Civic in Jan. '06, used, but just barely;  It had 4,800 miles on it.  I bought it at a time when gas was over $3/gal and I was driving >600 mi./wk.  I no longer have that long commute but I still could not be happier with this car. The VP stands for 'Value Package,' which means that it is the plain jane version, no power windows, mirrors, door locks, cruise control or sunroof.  I didn't realize at the time but the trade off for all those extras is fuel economy.  I use 87 octane fuel, and driving conservatively, with no A/C, I average almost 43mpg; with the A/C it drops to 40mpg.  That's combined 25%city/75% hwy driving.  The combined EPA estimate for that car is 38.      There is plenty of room in this car.  Seatbelts for 5 adults, although the back seat is a little cozy with 3 adults, you can belt them in.  The trunk is absolutely spacious for an economy car and the back seat lays down so 6' lumber or other items can be hauled.
I now have over 60K miles on the car without a hiccup.  You do sort of have to stay on top of the wheel alignment or it will eat the tires up fairly quickly.  The upside here is that the tires are relatively inexpensive. The ride is about what you might expect with a small car. It can be pretty rough on a dirt road, but on the interstate it is a non-issue. Also, the brakes just feel squishy.  We had an '84 Civic that had all the same issues.  If you're going to trade it in or sell it someday you will be pleased with the value you get for your trade.
